Presentation Abstract
"Chemical tools for nanoscale imaging: the interdisciplinary journey of a DECRA awardee."
Protein misfolding and aggregation are hallmarks of many neurodegenerative diseases. The ability to visualise the nanoscale organisation of proteins is crucial to understanding disease onset and progression. Tools and technologies that enable nano-scale visualisation are, therefore, highly sought after in this context, but also demand the application of knowledge from a number of fields. In this talk, I will discuss how I have brought together my unique combination of skills in the fields of chemistry and advanced imaging technologies to develop novel approaches for detecting and analysing proteins at the nano scale. I will reflect on some of the ways in which an ‘unconventional’ academic journey, that traverses disciplinary boundaries, can be leveraged to achieve innovative research outcomes.
Speaker's Bio
Amandeep Kaur is an ARC DECRA Fellow at the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. She obtained her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2016 under the supervision of Prof. Elizabeth New during which she worked on the design and synthesis of reversible fluorescent redox sensors. She then moved to the EMBL Australia Node for Single Molecule Science at the University of New South Wales as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, before returning to the University of Sydney to commence her independent career with the University of Sydney Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship. Her research is focused on the development of chemical sensors for super-resolution imaging applications. Through her role as an ambassador of the Sydney Nano ECR Forum, the founder of EMCRs in Oz , and the chair of RACI NSW Women in Chemistry group, she passionately advocates for early-career researchers and women in science.
